Letter Regarding Emergency Drills

September 2011

Dear Parents/Guardians:

RE: SCHOOL SECURITY DRILLS

New Jersey Statute (18A:41-1) now requires schools to have at least one fire drill and one school security drill each month within the school hours. The intent of these drills is to assure predictable response in the event of an actual emergency, identify problems and weaknesses in plans and procedures, and for staff and students to practice and experience what is expected of them during an emergency.

The purpose of this letter is to inform you that during the course of this school year, each of our schools will have eight security drills over the course of time. These drills will be held in addition to our monthly fire drills.

While the statue identifies both required and additional drills, some of the drills do not have to include students and may be done as simulated activities with faculty. As appropriate, drills will include pre-drill and "recovery" or debriefing components for staff and students. The required drills (2 each) include Lockdown, Evacuation, Bomb Threat, and Active Shooter Drills.

We would appreciate it if you would take a moment to talk to your children about the importance of school security drills and explain that security drills are used to practice their school's procedures for responding to various emergencies. While you will not receive advanced notification for the specific dates of the drills, school principals will send home a letter (elementary) and/or email (middle and high school) advising when a drill has taken place so that you can continue the discussion about safe practices with your children.

It is our hope that consistent training and practice will help everyone to recognize and respond to various security concerns. As always, our goal is the safety and security of all our students and staff! Thank you for your continued cooperation. Feel free to contact your child's principal if you have any questions or concerns regarding these drills.

Sincerely,

Patrick Spagnoletti

Superintendent of Schools
